For more significant sprains, following the acute phase of the healing process, most individuals will need to participate in a varying period of physical therapy activities. These activities include specific ankle stretching, strengthening and balance exercises. Usually 2-3 weeks of physical therapy are enough to help reduce swelling, increase strength and balance, and allow the individual to return to unrestricted activity. Often times, if an individual has had repeated sprains, the physician will recommend being braced or taped.
