Sports Medicine,located in the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute, provides medical care for all NCAA Division I Vanderbilt athletes as well as athletes of all ages and levels of competition from Tennessee and surrounding regions. Dr. Kurt P. Spindler, Director of Sports Medicine; Dr. John Kuhn, Associate Professor of Orthopaedics; Dr. Gene Hannah, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics; Dr. Andrew Gregory, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Pediatrics; Dr. Warren Dunn, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics; Dr. Paul J. Rummo, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, Dr. R. Warne. Fitch, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Emergency Medicine, and Dr. James Carey, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, lead the sports medicine staff which includes physical therapists and certified athletic trainers, in treating all athletic injuries and conditions, both musculoskeletal and general medical. The Center offers two distinct sports medicine fellowships, one for the orthopaedic surgeon and one for the primary care sports medicine physician.

Fellowship
The Orthopaedic Sports
Medicine & Shoulder Surgery Fellowship, under the
direction of Dr. John Kuhn, is a one-year program in which candidates
actively participate in the coverage of SEC varsity and high school
athletes. Fellows focus on developing skills in all aspects of the
musculoskeletal examination, ligament reconstruction, and arthroscopic
surgery of the knee, shoulder, ankle, and elbow. Active participation
in weekly didactic conferences on sports medicine topics as well
as appropriate orthopaedic resident conferences is encouraged. Fellows
also develop and complete an appropriate research project during
the year for publication of results and findings.
Pediatric Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
The Pediatric Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, under the direction
of Dr. Andrew Gregory, is a two-year program and welcomes applicants
with backgrounds in pediatrics, internal medicine and emergency
medicine. The program involves active participation in providing
both musculoskeletal and medical coverage for varsity and high school
athletes. The fellows will also have their own primary team coverage
assignments. In addition to the primary focus of learning musculoskeletal
examination skills, fellows also focus on systemic and general medical
concerns of athletes such as exercise-induced asthma, nutritional
guidance, and prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries
via appropriate training therapy methods. Fellows in this program
participate in clinic with all sports medicine faculty as well as
conduct one clinic each week in their area of specialty. Active
participation in weekly didactic conferences on sports medicine
topics as well as appropriate resident conferences is encouraged.
Fellows also develop and complete an appropriate research project
during the two-year period for publication of results and findings.
